Class 5, Angel Orensanz Foundation

We painted for about 2.5 hours in the beautiful sanctuary of Angel Orensanz.

This is actually out of place, it was painted last week, outdoors in the cold, by the Judge, at Eldridge Street Museum.

The following sequence shows the development of a watercolor. First the painting is begun on site and worked up as much as time allows and then the subsequent painitngs are developed from a reference photograph, memory and imagination.

Color Wheel

At the end of last class at Eldridge Sreet, I started to talk about a color wheel and I showed a piece of cardboard with the color wheel geometry from Johannes Itten, The Elements of Color.

Above is an example of the wheel painted with colors from an impressionist palette.

This color wheel is painted with colors from a very limited old master palette.

This piece of cardboard has the color wheel geometry drawn out and holes are punched at certain points so that a sharp lead can be put through to mark certain points from which many wheels can be constructed quicker for color testing and experimentation.

There are certain geometric similarities between the rose window and the color wheel, for instance, the number twelve.
